Please could you introduce yourself and your brand.
I´m Pau Esteve, born and raised in Barcelona. My interest in fashion started when I was a kid when I always created costumes for myself. Actually, I thought of them as my personal clothes.
I started to sew a long time ago, but I still took lessons in cutting, pattern design and sewing in order to be ready to offer my designs to customers.
I started selling new designs every two weeks in design markets in Berlin and Barcelona, where I got to know the needs and feels of girls and boys asking for unique clothes.
Three crazy years of producing everything myself and offering them to the final client made me the designer I am today: offering comfortable and timeless designs for a young and urban audience.
Analysing the environment and the cosmopolitan citizens of Berlin and Barcelona made me work on collections in terms of aesthetics but also in functionality, keeping a high level of quality.
The Brand: PAU ESTEVE
Founded together with Niko Brauer as Brand Manager, our approach to fashion can be defined by the concept of Sport Couture, which frees the individual from restrictive clothing without losing a sophisticated look.
We started presenting full collections at 080 Barcelona Fashion Week last year, gaining a lot of attention from specialised press and professionals. Now we are back on the street and in our atelier, working hard to make our concept last long!
What is the most important consideration when developing new pieces?
Comfortability, style and versatility: my designs are conceived with the idea that fashion cannot determine the day-to-day pace.
My main motivation is to offer designs for men: make them feel part of fashion trends and helping them have personal style without shrills. I started designing for myself a long time ago when I couldn’t find cool clothes anywhere and had to visit the women’s section in shops.
Happy this is changing in the past years, but guys still need interesting options.
You work between Barcelona and Berlin, how do these cities influence your work?
Barcelona is a beautiful city, full of cultural aspects, the same as Berlin but in such a different way… Uau! Barcelona is more conservative, but an explosion in colour and design history, Berlin is black and white and so new… Love them both!
The contrast between the two cities is like a bomb and makes me go crazy with creativity. I would say that it also keeps the balance between creativity and industry (selling) which can be overwhelming for a creative head like mine but very helpful at the same time.
Do you have a muse?
Everyone living hard and fighting for respect and equality. All girls and boys that are happy with themselves being unique without inhibitions.
What is your favourite piece from your current collection?
I’m proud of the grey DUST jumpsuit for her, and the DUST wide pants for him.
Could you describe Pau Esteve in three words?
Sweat: live hard!
Could you tell us about any upcoming exciting projects planned for 2017?
Uuuuu… Our SWEAT collection is coming to the shops this spring.
