Could you please introduce yourself and your label?
I am Andrea Hentze the founder and designer behind ANANEH Berlin. As a solo entrepreneur I founded the scarf label ANANEH Berlin in 2015, yet with the help from many awesome, creative and supportive friends.
ANANEH Berlin is a luxury scarf label which values the beauty of simplicity. Minimalistic designs in black and white, complemented with faux leather appliqué, create the unique ANANEH Berlin style. Carefully selected materials such as Crepe de Chine Silk set the perfect frame for the pure, elegant, timeless scarves of the first collection CONTRAST. Like my customers I value high quality. The scarves are therefore printed by a British silk scarf manufacturer and then appliquéd by hand in a little studio in Berlin.
How did you come up with the concept of the brand?
It took quite a while for me to live my passion and purpose. As a child one of the first words I could write was “Designer“, which was not easy but clearly highlighted my dream; to become one. However, living in a village in East Germany it’s unlikely to be achieved. I therefore forgot about my dream for a long time. I began work as a bank clerk, studied Sociology and then worked for several years as an IT Project Manager before my life changed completely.
Four years ago I attended a pattern workshop organised by a designer. The workshop provided non-designers the platform for creating their own scarf pattern whilst working alongside a graphic designer. After completing several workshops the results were ranked by family and friends; the top five scarves would then be produced. It was my first time doing pattern creation and my scarf was ranked top three. This passionate feeling I had during the design process was so special and remarkable. I just fell in love with what I did (and of course, I still am). The idea was born to create scarves.
Does the name have a special meaning?
The brand name ANANEH Berlin is a shorter version of my name ANdreA HENtze with letters turned upside down. In addition, it’s a symbol for this new beginning based on former structures: ANANEH Berlin, represents a strong and courageous version of myself, stretching and growing and living my dreams.
What is the main source of inspiration?
Just daily little observations of urban life that grab my attention. I see a lot of lines, geometrical shapes and patterns everywhere around me. The pavements with its woven bricks, the old houses in Berlin with its paving tiles and beautiful art deco patterns, lots of confetti on the streets… I transform these little snippets of information into abstract, minimal pattern.
What are your future plans for your brand?
ANANEH Berlin is a young brand, it is just in its infancy. The main target for 2017 is to get to know my target group better. What is it you are looking for in scarves? What is it you desire? Based on this, my second big goal is certainly to increase business cooperations and the number of point of sales. For example, I would love to see ANANEH Berlin scarves in selected European concept stores and luxury departments.
